We'd like to clarify some resume and ATS misconceptions, and provide some actionable advice.
𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆/𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗧𝗦𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸/𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀. Especially the larger enterprise ones that F500s use. Whether the organization enables that function is up to them. (Some do; some don't).
As former recruiters for Fortune 50-500 brands, we will say that large enterprise environments (tend to) enable the function. The ranking/score can be based on the pre-loaded questions 𝘢𝘯𝘥 the resume.
ADVICE: Don't assume you won't be ranked. Assume your resume optimization matters.
𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 (𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻) 𝗔𝗧𝗦𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿.
However, they do allow the recruiter to conduct a search within the pool of applicants based on various criteria, including keywords & qualifications.
ADVICE: You STILL should customize your resume for each posting. Even if you're not sitting in the applicant pool with a ranking, the recruiter may end up searching all resumes (including yours) based on the keywords in the posting, their intake meeting with the hiring managers (which is often added to the posting anyway), etc.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀: Often it's because the ATS uses AI to screen your app based on pre-loaded questions, and the company has enabled the auto-reject feature (and not set much a of a delay on the notification email).
ADVICE: 𝘛𝘳𝘺 to brush it off, and keep on going. (And I know that's hard). Why? Here is a dialogue recruiters are having: "𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘧 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴?" "𝘋𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘵?" "𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵, 𝘸𝘦'𝘳𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴." "𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯!? 𝘎𝘢𝘩!"
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.
You can have a 'master' resume or two... and only need 𝟻̲–̲𝟷̲𝟶̲ ̲𝚖̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚞̲𝚝̲𝚎̲𝚜̲ to customize. (And no, adding white SEO-driven text at the bottom doesn't help you).
